Greater Manchester Higher brings together universities, colleges and schools across our region with the shared goal of empowering learners to succeed.
Working in partnership enables us to offer an engaging and impartial programme of events and outreach activities, inspiring young people to explore routes into higher education, overcome educational barriers, and make informed choices about their future.
We deliver the Office for Students Uni Connect programme in Greater Manchester, which aims to support the government’s social mobility goals by rapidly increasing the number of young people from under-represented groups entering higher education.
Our teams consist of a range of unique and dedicated staff, and between us we have years of experience in planning and delivering educational outreach.
Some of us have a background in student recruitment, many have teaching experience, and others are experts in providing information, advice and guidance.
But the one thing we all have in common is we’re passionate about educational equality; championing young people; and supporting them to achieve their goals and ambitions.
Our central team oversee the operational delivery of the programme for our region, and are responsible for the governance of the project, and meeting the requirements of the Office for Students, including providing monitoring returns and operating plans on an annual basis.
Our friendly Hub Managers are responsible for building and maintaining school relationships. They provide all you need to know about our programme of activity and how to get involved, and can support with logistics and practicalities such as returning data and activity registers to us, and transport.
Our Graduate Advisers are based in the regional Hubs, and they deliver the vast majority of our in-school programme. Being recent graduates, they act as relatable peers to the learners they support.
Our Outreach Officers are based in our partner HEIs, and they’re responsible for developing and delivering activities which bring young people onto campus, giving them an insight into student life, and highlighting the vast array of career and subject pathways. A university setting isn’t for everyone, so our FE provision opens up different pathways for those more suited to studying HE in an alternative environment.

Go for Growth mentoring
Go for Growth is a personalised 6-week mentoring programme that gives learners the opportunity to work with mentors who have recently studied in higher education. Acting as positive academic role models, these mentors offer tailored support to help learners identify their strengths and weaknesses, develop effective study strategies, and set SMART goals using a Growth Mindset approach.
This case study explores the findings from 14 Year 10 learners from The Derby High School, divided into three focus groups, who participated in the mentoring programme. The study aims to highlight the themes, benefits, and overall impact on the learners.
