GM Care Leavers' Week celebration

To celebrate Care Leavers’ Week 2024, there will be a host of events aimed at young people of all ages with care experience and their supporters, offering them the change to learn more about higher education, cumulating in a celebration event on the 30th October.

This day will be a celebrate the achievements of care leavers and offer an insight into the opportunities in their future. A summary of activities on the day are below:

 

  • 4pm – 5pm – University Uncovered and subject tasters:

 

    • University Uncovered campus tour: Did you know that Joseph Whitworth, after whom Whitworth Hall, Whitworth Art Gallery and Whitworth Street are named after, was placed in Foster Care by his father at the age of 11? As part of our Care Leaver Week Activity 2024, we’d like to invite you to join us for a one-hour tour of the history and heritage of The University of Manchester led by Grant Collier, University Heritage Curator. Discover interesting facts about the current and hidden history of the University, and the impacts it’s had on the city and the world.

 

    • Criminology taster session: Turn your crime-curiosity into a crime-busting degree and come along to our Criminology taster session, held at The University of Manchester. Get an in-depth look into the world of a Criminologist and find out what it’s like to study Criminology at university with a taster session delivered by a PhD student currently doing research in this field.
    • Nursing in the 21st Century – Nursing Uni Taster Session Passionate about helping others? Enjoy a challenge? A career in nursing could be for you! Come along to our nursing taster session to find out what nurses really do and how to begin your own nursing journey by studying for a degree in adult, mental health or children and young people’s nursing.
    • Welcome to Science and Engineering at Manchester Met : The Dalton Building is the new home to our Faculty of Science and Engineering.  Following an £115m investment in our campus, it opened its doors to students in September this year. We are offering you the opportunity to view our world class facilities and learn more about our world-leading research, our courses and how to get involved in our exciting projects.If you are interested in careers in Sciences, Maths, Computing, Engineering and what it’s like to study them at University, please book a place by emailing i.hay@mmu.ac.uk

 

  • 5pm – 6pm – Marketplace: This will be an opportunity for young people and their supporters to meet and network with organisations that offer opportunities to young people with care experience and get advice on their education, career and more.

 

  • 6pm – 7:30pm – Greater Manchester Care Leavers Celebration Evening: Young people who are nominated will be invited to join for an evening of entertainment and guest speakers, celebrating the achievements of young people with experience of care. All attendees will receive a letter explaining why they are being celebrated and receive a goodie bag.

Events in Care Leavers' Week

Online Webinar: Supporting young people with care experience applying to HE

16th October, 3pm – 5pm 

Online

 

Hosted by UCAS, this online session will cover step by step, the stages to applying for a higher education course, key aspects to higher education, and the ways in which you can support your young people.

Primary school visit day

29th October, 9:15am – 12:30pm 

The University of Manchester

 

This day for primary age students will offer an introduction to higher education, and include sessions around what is higher education, student life and a campus quest.

Step Up to Uni

24th October

Manchester Metropolitan University

 

This day for students in Y11-13 will offer the opportunity to learn more about the options at higher education, what it is like being a student and practical advice to applying for course.
