The seventh annual Greater Manchester Care Leaver Awards takes place this October, recognising and celebrating the achievements of local young people from across Greater Manchester. The awards are delivered by the Greater Manchester Higher partnership and take place at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) on Thursday 23 October 2019.
This year we are excited to welcome Keynote speaker Saaed Atcha MBE, a young Greater Manchester charity founder appointed, with the Queen’s agreement, Deputy Lieutenant of Greater Manchester. Saeed Atcha, 22, from Bolton, became the youngest recipient of an MBE in Her Majesty the Queen’s 2019 New Year’s Honours List for services to young people and the community in Greater Manchester.
The awards are a fantastic example of collaborative working; as higher education institutions, further education colleges, and local authorities work together along with foster carers, social workers and young people to create an event that celebrates the success of care-experienced young people.
The number of nominations received and audience size has grown year on year, increasing the breadth of the impact the project has, this year we received 325 nominations- the highest ever!
The Care Leavers Association chair of trustees said, “Attending the Greater Manchester Care Leaver Awards is always one of the best nights of my year. The awards challenge preconceptions that many people hold about care leavers and celebrate great achievements in many areas of life. It is wonderful that the CLA has been at the heart of these awards for the past five years, working with a range of Greater Manchester education providers, social services and other organisations. To see so many care leavers who have achieved so much is one of the most uplifting experiences one can have. The perfect end to any day.”
We look forward to celebrating the fantastic nominees and winners.
