GCSE English Student Support Club – developing your students’ confidence in
• exam techniques
• reading critically
• writing with flair and originality

Our GCSE student support club is focused on the AQA GCSE English exam and will equip your students with a range of practical, engaging and motivating activities that will develop their confidence and understanding of the exam requirements. All students will have a revision guide to take away as a follow up to the support club.

Day 1 will consist of 3 key areas that have been prepared as a bespoke package, based on the feedback received on the areas your students find most challenging.
Paper 1, Question 3: Structure
This session will explore how to look at a text holistically and provide students with the critical reading skills needed to make connections within the text. In order to improve students’ analytical skills, there will be an emphasis on the vocabulary of effective analysis.
Paper 1, Question 4: Evaluation
Your students will explore how to confidently present an evaluation of the text by using evidence skilfully to support and challenge the statement provided in the question.
Paper 1, Question 5: Writing to describe.
In this practical writing workshop, your students will connect with the visual stimulus in a variety of ways to generate ideas, perspective, place, character and mood. Students will also explore how they can draw upon their own environment and background to create an original narrative.

The English Student Support Club will be led by Jonathan Morgan, a former GCSE English Principal examiner and co-author of Revise AQA GCSE English Language 9-1 Revision Guide & Revision Workbook. Jonathan is a former Head of English and Secondary English consultant with over twenty years’ teaching, consultancy and examining experience. Jonathan is currently Director of The National Association for the Teaching of English. https://www.nate.org.uk/team/
