Destination Rail Manchester 2021
Event providers: University of Salford
Join us in exploring opportunities in rail, from the careers available in the sector to the higher education routes that can get you there.
What is Destination Rail?
Destination Rail focuses on providing students in year 9 and year 10 with a unique and hands-on opportunity to explore careers in the rail industry and the pathways to these careers, whilst at the same time engaging with employers from across the sector and Higher Education providers alike. The programme aims to address the growing skills shortage in the rail sector by highlighting the true breadth of careers available in rail whilst breaking down many of the stereotypes associated with the industry. This is done presenting rail and rail careers in a fun and engaging way culminating in the Destination Rail Challenge, where students compete against one another to win prizes for their school.
We understand that this academic year is particularly difficult for schools in terms of managing enrichment and careers activities, so we have opted for an in-school digital-blended approach that maintains the ‘event’ feel through four ‘live streamed’ sessions for your students to tune into. These four sessions will occur on the same day, at the same time, across 4 Thursdays in April-May. Please see below for details:
Thursday 29th April, 10:00-11:00am
- A one-hour live-streamed ‘launch’ into classrooms introducing students to the programme, the challenge and the STEM ambassadors who will be acting as mentors.
Thursday 6th May
- A one-hour STEM ambassador Q&A/mentoring session in a pre-agreed timeslot where students can showcase how they are getting on with the challenge and receive real advice from a real-life rail industry professional.
Thursday 13th May
- A virtual tour of the University of Salford campus in a pre-agreed timeslot, where they can get an insight into Higher Education opportunities and university life
Thursday 20th May, 10:00-11:00am
- Live-streamed announcement to congratulate students on the students work in the challenge and to announce the winners.
